주로 영국의 대학에 다니는 이공계 학생들을 독자로 염두에 두고 쓴 것이지만
인문계 학생들에게도 충분히 적용 가능하다고 봅니다.

1. 앞으로 어떤 직업을 택할지 고민하는데 적어도 1주일은 써라
생물학과 졸업장으로 실험실에서 일하고 싶은가?
화학을 전공해 아이들을 가르치고 싶은가?
아니면 대학 졸업생의 45%처럼 전공과는 상관 없이
금융 같은 전혀 다른 분야로 뛰어들 것인가?
이러한 근본적인 질문에 명쾌한 대답을 제시하지 못한다면
꿈의 직업을 얻을 수 없다는 것은 자명하다.
런던 임페리얼 칼리지의 취업상담소장 Elspeth Farrar의 조언처럼
자신이 갖고 있는 능력,
자신이 사용하고 싶은 능력,
자신이 발전시켜야 할 필요가 있는 능력에 대해 자기 자신에게 솔직할 필요가 있다.
많은 사람들은 구직 광고를 찾아 헤메거나
인터넷 웹사이트를 체크하거나 구직 상담을 하면서
앞으로 어떤 직업을 택해야 할지에 대해 노심초사한다.
하지만 철저한 사전 조사를 해두었다면 더 이상 걱정할 필요가 없다.
2. 입사 지원서를 발송하라
연습을 많이 해야 완벽해진다.
정말 급박한 상황에 닥치기 전에 미리 몇 장 써보는 것은 어떨까.
3. 이력서를 작성하라(살아있는 동안 계속 할 일이다)
지겨운 일이지만 졸업하기 훨씬 전에 해둬야 한다.
어떤 취업상담자들은 '가상'이력서를 작성해보라고 권한다.
그러면 어느 부분이'공백'인지 알 수 있다.
더 중요한 것은 당신이 해온 공부, 활동, 자원봉사에 대해
하나도 남김 없이 적어야 한다는 것이다.
모두가 중요하다.
4. 과제물을 마감 1주일전에 제출해보라
말로 표현할 수 없는 짜릿한 감동을 느끼게 될 것이다
5. 캠퍼스에 있는 모든 도서관을 방문하라
단 한번만 도서관 데이타베이스에서 단행본과 정기간행물을 어떻게 찾는지 알아둬라.
어려운 일처럼 보인다면 친구들과 함께 도서관 컴컴한 구석에서 피크닉을 즐겨라.
눈에 띄지 않는 곳을 잘 선택해야 한다.
폐간된지 40년 이상된 과학 잡지 코너가 적당할 것 같다
6. 연극에서 주역으로 출연하라(노래방에서 빼지마라)
명예와 주목을 한 몸에 받는 것은 기본이다.
인터뷰 기술을 키우는데 도움이 된다.
강압적인 분위기에서 말하기,
어떠한 상황에서도 임기응변 능력을 발휘하고 냉정을 잃지 않기 등.
공연 뒷풀이도 재미있다.
7. 직업 박람회에 가보라
너무 많은 정보와 회사 때문에 나올 때는 현기증이 날지도 모른다.
하지만 가끔은 문구에서부터 민트 사탕 같은 괜찮은 기념품을 무료로 나눠준다.
그리고 꿈의 직업을 찾을지 누가 아는가.
8. 역사학 강의를 수강하라
다른 전공의 수업이라면 어떤 것이라도 좋다.
대학은 지성을 넓히는 곳이므로 많은 것에 폭넓게 관심을 가져라.
누가 아는가.
현재의 자기 전공을 포기하고
고대 중국 도자기에 대해 공부하는 게 더 나을지도 모를 일이다.
9. 자선을 위해 뭔가 바보같은 짓을 해보라
제임스 본드 007 영화라면 하나도 빼놓지 말고
48시간 동안 한 잠도 자지 말고 계속해서 본다든지,
대형 빌딩 옥상에서 로프를 타고 내려온다는지,
구운 콩으로 가득채운 욕조에서 오후 내내 누워 있어보라.
불쌍한 사람들을 위해 뭔가 도와주는 것은 물론이고
학생자선단체(RAG)에 참여하는 것은 이력서 작성에 큰 도움을 준다
10. 미친듯이 사랑에 빠져보라
물론 가슴이 찢어질 것 같은 실연을 경험해보라.
많은 것을 깨닫게 해준다.
사랑하는 사람과 매일 같은 수업을 들을 경우에 특히 그렇다.
11. 학생 회관에서 아르바이트를 하라
학생회관 펍에서 일하면
많은 사람들과 만나게 되고 돈도 벌 수 있고 유명인사가 될 수 있다.
나중에 취직할 때도 좋은 경력이 된다.
고객을 다루는 법, 동료 스태프를 통해 사람을 다루는 기술을 익힐 수 있다.
(영국 대학은 캠퍼스 기숙사 근처에 학생들을 위한 펍 Pub이 있다.
학생회가 운영하며 시내 펍보다 맥주값이 저렴하다.
바에서 일하는 종업원들도 학생들이다.)
12. 부전공이나 복수 전공을 택하라
전혀 새로운 분야를 전공해도 된다.
다양한 관심사, 새로운 아이디어에 대해 두루 능통하게 되고 유연성을 갖게 된다.
취직할 때 플러스 요인으로 작용하는 것들이다.
13. 유니버시티 챌린지 팀에 도전하라
공중파 TV에서 바보 취급당하려면 이보다 더 좋은 기회는 없다.
그리고 두고두고 추억거리가 된다.
(유니버시티 챌린지는 그라나다 텔레비전이 제작한 영국의 TV 퀴즈쇼다.
1953년부터 57년까지

1959년부터 70년까지 NBC TV가 방송했던 College Bowl이라는 프로를 모델로 했다. )
14. 미술 전공 학생과 토론을 벌여라
모든 사람이 자기 전공만 공부할 가치가 있다고 생각한다.
예술과 과학 사이엔 오랜 반목이 이어져왔다.
이젠 그 장벽을 허물어야 한다.
이공계 학생들도 다른 능력을 보여주면 취직할 때 도움이 된다.
어떤 회사에서는 수리 능력이 큰 도움이 되지만,
15. 동아리에 가입하라
위스키 시음 클럽이든, 뜨개질 동아리든간에
시간이 허락하는 만큼 많은 동아리에 가입하라.
희망하는 회사의 사장은 대학 서클에 적극 참여한 학생들을 뽑고 싶어한다.
훌륭한 대인 관계와 활발한 성격의 소유자이기 때문이다.
다양한 동아리 활동은 면접 때 뭔가 더 말할 수 있는 소재를 제공해준다.
회사에서는 열정과 참여를 원한다는 것을 기억하라.
16. 남아있는 방법도 생각해보라
여름방학 때 기숙사에 쭈그리고 있으라는 말은 아니다.
석사 또는 박사학위를 받기 위해 더 공부하라는 말이다.
전공이 마음에 든다면 한번 도전해 보라.
신중하게 생각해볼만한 가치가 있다.
하지만 이 50가지 목록을 모두 실천해보기 위해 남아있지는 말라.
17. 선거에 참여하라
또는 선거에 출마하라.
동료 학생들의 운명을 결정하는 역할을 맡는 것만큼 리더십에 도움이 되는 없다.
고용자들은 지도자를 좋아한다.
18. 시위에 참가하라
바삭바삭한 감자 튀김,
더 싼 가격의 생맥주를 위해,
또는 현안이 되는 것이면 무엇이든 간에,
피켓을 들고 투쟁해보지 않았다면 진짜 학생이 아니다.
19. 교수와 친하게 지내라 Hug a Professor
물론 알고 지내는 것으로 충분하다.
대학생이라면 자신에게 용기를 주고 영감을 불어넣어주는 교수 한 명은 있다.
정말 귀중한 멘토가 되어 한번도 상상해보지 못한 직업의 기회를 열어줄 수도 있다.
멋진 조언을 해줄 수도 있다.
교수와의 관계를 돈독히 하기 위해서라면 시간을 투자할 가치가 있다.
하지만 모든 교수가 그런 것은 아니다.
20. 로컬 밴드를 발굴하라
이들이 콜드플레이(Cold Play. 1998년 영국 런던에서 결성된 록 밴드.
지금까지 음반 판매고가 3500만장을 넘었다)가 된다는 보장은 없겠지만,
만약 그렇게만 된다면 5년 후엔 이렇게 말하면서 우쭐해 하지 않겠는가 상상해보라.
"그래 정말 훌륭하지 않아?
나는 쟤네들을 2007년에 학생회관에서 처음 보았어."
21. 취업을 경험해보라
직업 상담소에서는 대학 재학 중에 할 수 있는 가장 중요한 일로 취업 경험을 꼽는다.
회사에서는 항상 실무 능력을 갖춘 졸업생을 찾는다.
따라서 취업 경험이야말로 이력서를 빛나게 하는 최선의 방법이다.
과학 직종에서는 관련된 취업 경험은 필수적이다.
실험실, 현장, 데이타베이스를 두루 잘 알고 있음을 보여줘야 한다.
기업에서는 방학을 이용해 인턴사원을 채용하기 때문에 기회는 많다.
채용이 되어 일할 때는
자신이 수행했던 모든 과제와 개발한 능력에 대해 꼼꼼히 기록해 둬라.
나중에 이력서 쓸 때 큰 도움이 될 것이다.
22. 토론회에 참가해 발표하라
공중 앞에서 어리석고 참을 수 없는 말을 하기전에 두번 생각하게 만드는 것은 기본이다.
청중 앞에서 말하는 것은 많은 직업에서 중요한 부분을 차지한다.
시끄러운 학생들과 설전을 벌여 이길 수 있다면
앞으로 미래의 고객이나 사장과도 아무런 문제가 없을 것이다.
23. 아이들에게 과학을 가르치라
전국의 대학에서는 학부 학생들을 1일 교사로
지방 학교에 보내는 프로그램을 운영하고 있다.
학생들에게도 당신 자신에게도 좋은 기회다.
가르치는 기회를 갖는다는 것도 큰 경력이다.
자신에게 교사나 교수의 자질이 있는지 시험해볼 수 있는 기회이기도 하다.
24. 부모님을 맥주집으로 모시고 가라
당신의 새로운 모습, 성장한 모습을 보여주라.
하지만 장소 선정은 신중하게 하라.
자식이 즐겨 다니는 동네 나이트클럽에 가고 싶어하는 엄마 아빠는 없다.
25. 블로그를 만들라
매일 매일 글을 쓰는 것은 의사소통 기술을 개발하는 데 도움이 된다.
직업 세계에서는 커뮤니케이션 기술이 필수적이다.
특히 이공계 졸업생들에게 모자라는 부분이기도 하다.
과학 관련 블로그는 인터넷으로 네트워크를 구축할 수 있는 좋은 방법이다.
직업과 희망하는 회사에 대한 새로운 시야를 열어준다.
심지어 블로그를 통해 직업을 구할 수도 있다.
하지만 장래의 회사 사장에게 당신의 생각을 공개해도 될지 잘 판단해야 한다.
특히 꾸물거림의 즐거움에 대한 내용이라면 말이다.
26. 잡 섀도잉(Job Shadowing)을 해보라
'잡 섀도잉'(반나절 정도 기업체에 가서 특정 업무를 지켜 보는 프로그램)은
입사하기 전 직업에 대한 맛보기를 원하는 학생들에 점점 인기를 끌고 있다.
대개 단기간에 걸친 무보수 채용이지만
어떤 회사의 실무, 문화, 환경을 파악하는데 도움을 준다.
귀중한 네트워크를 구축할 수 있는 시간이기도 하다.
27. 수업시간에 파자마를 입고 가라
이공계는 예술계 학생들보다 수업이 일찍 시작된다.
오전 9시 수업은 보통이다.
그래서 바지 안에 파자마를 입더라도 한번쯤은 시도해보라.
하지만 잠옷 바람이라고 해서 아예 아침부터 곯아떨어지진 말라.
무례한 짓이다.
28.햄버거를 만들어보라
학사, 석사, 박사 학위를 받게 되면
여름 방학 동안 돈벌기 위해 부지런히 일해야 할 필요가 없을 것이다.
그동안 젊었을 때 고생했다면서 자식들에게 허풍을 떨만한 하찮은 일감을 구하라.
하지만 다국적 기업의 햄버거 체인점에서 일하는 것은 말도 안된다.
현명한 학생이라면
글래스톤베리(영국 서남부의 도시)에서 열리는
야외 페스티벌(Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts.
그냥 '글래스톤베리 페스티벌' 또는'글래스토'라고도 한다.
세계 최대 규모의 공연예술 페스티벌로
15만명을 수용할 수 있는 야외무대에서 385회의 공연이 열린다)의 버거를 팔아 돈을 번다.
29. 양복을 사라
당신이 구멍난 청바지와 헐렁한 트레이닝을 무척 즐겨 입는다는 것쯤은 잘 알고 있다.
하지만 면접 때는 어울리지 않지 않는가?
면접에서 첫 인상이 가장 중요하다.
따라서 헐렁하게 입고가는 것은 흔히 저지르는 실수다.
사장에게 당신이 진지하고 전문적이며 유능하다는 사실을 보여주라.
지금이라도 저축해서 클래식한 양복 한벌을 구입하라.
자주색 줄 무늬나 대형 옷깃은 몇년 후 유행이 지나면 후회하게 될 지도 모른다.
30. 직업상담소를 방문하라
직업상담소에서는 이력서 쓰는 법, 구인 정보 등에 잘 알고 있다.
따라서 그들의 노하우를 최대한 활용해야 한다.
31. 지나칠 정도로 잘난 체할 때
누구에게나 적어도 한번은 찾아오게 마련인 만큼 걱정하지 말라.
하지만 계속 잘난체 하다가 피해를 볼 경우 즉시 도움을 요청하라.
32. 뭔가 모임을 꾸며라
대학 시절은 이벤트를 꾸밀 수 있는 좋은 기회다.
파티, 집회, 학술대회, 코미디 공연 등 어떤 것도 좋다.
그 자체가 재미있는 일이지만
팀워크, 문제 해결, 조직 능력 등은 회사에서도 필요한 덕목이다.
33. 제대로 된 저녁 파티를 주최하라
10명 이상을 초대해 레시피가 있는 제대로 된 음식을 요리해 대접해 보라.
34. 자원봉사에 참가하라
시간과 능력을 바쳐 어떤 기관을 위해 봉사하는 것은
네트워크를 형성하고 친구를 사귀고 귀중한 경험을 쌓기 위한 좋은 방법이다.
취직할 때도 적절한 봉사활동은 아르바이트 경험만큼 중요하다.
35. 문화 생활에 욕심을 내라
나인 투 파이브로 움직이는 직장 생활을 일단 시작하면
박물관이나 미술관, 강의시간에 등장했던 인상깊은 건물을 방문할 시간적 여유가 없다.
그러므로 인파가 몰리지 않는 시간대를 택해서 문화재를 즐겨라.
36. 스포츠 팀에 들어라
뭐가 좋을지 고민한다면 탁구는 어떨까.
37. 사업을 시작하라
회사에서는 기업 정신을 높이 평가한다.
독립성, 동기화 , 창조적 사고를 보여주기 때문이다.
38. 집을 나가라
기숙사 생활을 하면
집에서 누릴 수 있는 모든 호사를-
정시에 식사 제공, 자동차 기름값 필요 없음-
누리면서도 룸메이트와 함께 사는 게 부모님보다 훨씬 재미있다.
하지만 언젠가는 기숙사도 나가야 한다.
엄청난 독립감을 맛볼 수 있게 된다.
룸메이트와 함께 생활하려면 누가 우유를 사고 접시를 닦을지 정확한 순서를 정해야 한다.
39. 친구 100명을 만들어라
오래된 펍(pub. 영국식 선술집)
또는 지금까지 언급한 커리큘럼 이외의 방법으로 가능하다.
필사적으로 친구를 사귀고 싶다면 돈을 주고 매수해도 좋다.
하지만 21세기적인 방법도 있다.
Facebook이라는 사교 네트워킹 사이트가 있다.
우정의 정의를 넓힐 준비가 되어 있다면 쉽게 할 수 있다.
우정과 사랑을 나눠라.
40. 학교 로고가 박힌 유니폼을 구입하라
졸업하기 전에 옛 시절을 떠올리게 하는 면 티셔츠를 구입하라.
하지만 때와 장소를 가려서 입어라.
캠퍼스를 벗어나면 유행에 아주 뒤떨어져 보인다.
공원에서 축구할 때나 입어라.
41. 동물원에 가라
가까운 곳에 동물원 하나쯤은 있게 마련이다.
감금 상태의 동물의 행동에 대해 새롭게 관찰해보라.
동물원은 솔직히 말하자면 직업 세계와 같다고 해도 과언이 아니다.
42. 잡지를 정기 구독하라
또는 일간 신문을 받아보라.
과제물로 읽어야 할 책이 산더미처럼 쌓여 있겠지만
가능하면 자주 시사 정보를 흡수하도록 노력하라.
특히 자신이 선택한 진로와 관계 있는 것이면 특히 관심을 가져라.
모든 고용주는 주변 환경에 대해 폭넓은 감각을 소유한,
예리하고 현실감각이 있는 사원을 원한다.
물론 파파라치 대열에 합류할 계획이 아니라면
'Heat'(1999년 창간한 영국의 연예 잡지. 2004년 발행부수 1위를 기록했다)같은 잡지는
구독해봐야 소용없다.
43. 동전으로 1000 파운드(약 20만원)를 모아라
큰 그릇을 동전으로 채워라.
요긴하게 쓸 날이 올 것이다.
졸업하자 말자 학자금 대출을 갚느라 바빠진다.
이왕이면 돈을 갚을 때
지폐보다는 1000 파운드 상당의 동전 꾸러미를 넘겨주는 게 멋지지 않겠는가?
44. 샌드위치 학년을 써라
(샌드위치 학년 Sandwich year이란
제약회사, 병원 연구소, 범죄 과학 연구소 등
연구 환경 속에서 실무 경험을 쌓기 위한 것으로
보통 이공계 대학의 2학년과 3학년 사이에 실시한다.
돈도 벌 수 있고 희망 직업의 가능성에 대해 평가할 수 있는 기회다.)
공학이나 생화학과 학생들은 1년 정도 휴학하고 취업하는 경우가 많다.
대부분의 친구들보다 1년 늦게 졸업하지만
나중에 같은 분야에 취업할 기회가 넓어지는 장점이 있다.
여기서 습득한 기술은 이력서에서 가장 돋보이는 부분이다.
샌드위치 학년 때 좋은 인상을 남기면 졸업 후에 곧장 취직할 수도 있다.
1년간 샌드위치 학년을 보낸 학생들은 졸업 시험에서도 훨씬 좋은 성적을 낸다.
45. 가장 무도회에 가라
최고급 의상을 입고 새로운 단계의 과시욕과 창조력을 발견하라.
플래시 라이트와 자동차 배터리를 곁들이면 금상첨화다.
46. 연구실을 환하게 만들어라
엘렌마이어(Erlenmeyer) 플라스크만 있어도 훌륭한 꽃병이 된다.
우중충한 실험실 벤치가 환해진다.
47. 종교에서 진리를 발견하라
그리고/또는 (종교를) 버려라
48. 일거리를 찾아라
꿈의 시나리오는 대학 졸업 후 곧장 직업을 갖는 것이다.
그리고 다수의 부지런한 사람들이 이를 성취한다.
하지만 뒤쳐진다고 해서 당황하거나 겁먹지 말라.
대부분의 이공계 졸업생들은 상당히 빨리 취직한다.
2005년 졸업 후 6개월까지의 실업률은 6.2%에 불과했다
(졸업생의 93.8%가 졸업 후 6개월만에 취직했다).
처음부터 꿈의 직업을 갖는 사람은 거의 없다.
앞으로 40년이란는 긴 세월 동안 행복한 직업을 얻을 수 있는 충분한 시간이 있다.
49. 두번 정도는 술을 끊어라
머리를 화장실 변기에 쳐박고 있을 때 가장 효과적인 방법이다.
당신이 부끄러운 줄 알라.
50. 마음을 열어라
모든 것은 마음먹기에 달렸다.
우리가 스트레스를 받았던 것은 학위로 직업의 기회가 열린다는 점이다.
많은 사람들이 대학에 입학해 학과 공부에만 집중하다 보면
직업의 광범위한 범주를 보기 어렵다.
이공계 대학을 졸업하면 생각보다 진출 범위가 넓다.

3 Work on your CV Boring, but it has to be done, and aeons before you graduate. Some careers advisers suggest that you start by compiling your "fantasy" CV - it will let you see where the holes are. More important is to include absolutely every relevant bit of work, activities or voluntary work you've done, says Heather Collier of the National Council for Work Experience. It all counts. |

4 Hand in an assignment a week early You'll be amazed at the feeling. |

5 Visit every library on campus And learn, once and for all, how to locate books and journal articles from the library database. If that sounds too much like hard work, have a picnic with some friends in a dark corner. Choose your section wisely to avoid discovery: the area given to scientific journals more than 40 years old is usually a good bet. |

6 Star in a play Apart from the glory and attention, think of the benefits to your interviewing skills: speaking under pressure, the ability to improvise and to appear calm in any situation. The cast parties are usually a bit of a whirl, too. |

7 Attend a careers fair Sure, there is so much information and so many companies that you are liable to leave the fair with nothing more than a head spin, but they do often give away some decent swag - from stationery to breath-mint dispensers. And who knows, maybe you'll find your dream job. |

8 Attend a history lecture Or any other subject that's not your own. They say university is about broadening the mind, so look interested and take lots of notes. Who knows, you might decide that your degree was the wrong choice, and you'd be better placed studying ancient Chinese porcelain. |

9 Do something stupid for charity Stay awake for 48 hours watching every single James Bond film back-to-back, abseil down a very large building, or spend the afternoon in a bath full of baked beans. Apart from the fact that you're doing your bit for the less fortunate, getting involved with your university's RAG (raising and giving) organisation looks great on your CV. |

10 Fall madly in love And of course, get your heart broken. It's a learning experience. Especially when you have lectures with the object of your affection every day. |

11 Pull pints Working at the student bar is a great way to meet people, make some money and become the most popular person in the room. Employers also value this work experience: you have to work with customers, hone interpersonal skills via other bar staff, and handle sums of money. How very responsible of you. |

12 Take a course or alternative module Heck, you might even learn something new. Plus it shows you are well-rounded and flexible, have varied interests and are open to new ideas - very desirable employee traits. |

13 Try out for the University Challenge team You might never get another chance to make a fool of yourself on national TV - like student Tareq El Menabawey from the University of Newcastle. When Jeremy Paxman asked for the name of an exotic yellow-tailed bird from South America, Tareq buzzed in, panicked and blurted out "budgie". "Jeremy Paxman was not impressed, and repeated the words 'budgie? budgie?' back at me," he says. Apart from the nightmares, he laughs about it now. |

14 Argue with an arts student Everyone thinks their subject is the only one worth studying, and the Arts vs Science feud has been running for years. Here's something new you can throw back at 'em: science and engineering graduates have a leg-up in the job market because of their extra skills, says Farrar. For example, numeracy is a real boon for some employers, and you don't get that studying Chaucer. |

15 Join a society Sign up to as many as you have time for, whether it's the whisky-tasting club or the knitting fraternity. Prospective bosses love to see students richly involved in their university communities. It speaks of dynamic, motivated people with good interpersonal skills. Varied activities also give you something a little extra to talk about during interviews - remember that employers want enthusiasm and commitment. |

16 Consider never leaving We don't mean squatting in the halls during summer break, but staying on to study for a master's or PhD. If your subject excites you and you fancy a challenge, then this is definitely worth some careful thought. Please don't stay on simply to tick off all the things on this list, however. |

17 Vote Or better, run for an elected position. Nothing says leadership more than a role deciding the fate of fellow students. Employers love leaders. |

18 Attend a protest You can't call yourself a real student until you've taken up paint and poster board in the fight for crispier crisps, cheaper pints, or whatever else is going on. |

19 Hug a professor Simply getting to know one will suffice, though. Everyone knows at least one professor who inspired or encouraged them. They can become an invaluable mentor, show you career opportunities you wouldn't have imagined, and of course, write you fantastic references. It's worth putting in the time to build a relationship with that person. Remember, though, not all professors like a cuddle. |

21 Get some work experience Careers advisers say that this is the most important activity you can do while at university. Employers are always on the lookout for graduates with practical skills, and work experience is the best way to make your CV shine. In many scientific jobs, relevant work experience is simply a must - you need to prove you know your way around a lab bench, field site or database. Companies offer placements during university holidays, so you have plenty of opportunities. When on the placement, keep a log of all the tasks you've done and the skills you develop - it will help when it comes to CV-writing later. |

22 Speak at a debate Apart from making you think twice before saying anything ridiculous and unsupportable in public ever again, addressing an audience is an important part of many jobs. If you can engage a bunch of rowdy students then you'll have no problems with a future client or your boss. |

23 Teach science to kids Universities nationwide have set up programmes with local schools to get undergraduates into classrooms. It's a boon for the kids and great for you too. Teaching experience looks great on your CV, plus it gives you a taster of the profession |

24 Take your parents to the pub Let them see the new, grown-up you. Choose the location carefully, though, mama and papa are unlikely to enjoy your local nightclub, however much you love it. |

25 Write a blog Daily writing will improve your communication skills, which is a must in the working world, and can sometimes be lacking in science and engineering graduates. Science-based blogs are also a great way to network across the internet, giving you a new view into careers and potential employers. It might even get you a job. However, it's worth considering what you share with the world - ask yourself whether you would want prospective bosses to read your musings, especially if they are mainly about the joys of procrastination. |

26 Try a job shadow Job-shadowing is an increasingly popular option for students who want to get a taste of a career before committing. Usually it's only a short-term, unpaid placement, but it provides insight into the work, culture and environment of a company without actually getting stuck in it. It's also valuable networking time. |

27 Wear your pyjamas to a lecture One of the great disappointments at the start of a science degree comes when you discover just how many 9 am lectures you have compared with arts students. So it's OK to do this once, even if you cheat and wear the pyjamas under your clothes. But don't fall asleep - that would be rude. |

28 Flip burgers Soon you'll be an oh-so-qualified bachelor, master or doctor, and never again will you have to slog away for cash during your summer holidays. In the meantime, take a menial job just so you can brag to your kids that you had it tough when you were young. Forget working for a multinational burger chain, however. The smart student makes their summer cash in a burger van at an outdoor festival like Glastonbury. Your kids will never need to know you had fun doing it. |

29 Buy a suit Yes we know that you just adore those hole-ridden jeans and super-comfortable trainers, but they aren't exactly interview material, are they? First impressions in the interview room may be the most important ones you get to make, and dressing sloppily is a common mistake. Show employers that you are serious, professional and competent. Invest now and buy a good quality, classically styled ensemble; you might regret the giant lapels and fuchsia stripes in a few years. |

30 Visit the careers office Careers advisers are the people who know their way around work placements, job vacancies and CV-writing, so you should tap all of their know-how while you still have access to it. |

31 Become excessively pretentious It happens to all of us at least once, so don't worry. If, however, there are signs of permanent damage, seek help immediately. |

32 Organise something Your university years are the prime time to put on an event, whether it's a party, rally, conference or comedy night. In addition to all the fun, accolades and free entry, event planning on any scale shows off teamwork, problem solving and organisational skills - three of the top sought-after traits in potential employees, according to the Association of Graduate Recruiters. |

33 Throw a proper dinner party For a true challenge, you have to invite more than 10 people, and cook food that requires a recipe. |

34 Volunteer Donating your time and skills to any organisation is a great way to network, make friends and gain valuable real-world experience. For many jobs, appropriate volunteer work is just as good as the paid stuff. |

35 Be a culture vulture Once fully ensconced in the 9 to 5 working world, you won't have time to visit museums, galleries and impressive buildings between lectures. So take the opportunity to enjoy your local treasures, without the crowds. |

36 Join a sports team In case you were wondering, pool and table tennis do count. |

37 Start a business Employers adore the entrepreneurial spirit - it shows off those top desirable traits of independence, motivation and creative thinking. Not to mention you could make some serious money in the process. Many universities host entrepreneurial competitions with cash prizes, and they also offer useful advice, access to mentors and skill-building for starting up your own business. |

38 Live out Living in halls has all the perks of home - meals at set times and no gas bills - but the flatmates tend to be a lot more fun than your parents. However, any student should live out eventually: it offers a fabulous taste of independence. Make sure to have at least one blazing row about who buys the milk and washes the dishes. |

39 Make 100 friends You could do this via any of the traditional pub or extra-curricular methods listed so far, or even with bribery if you're desperate. But for a more 21st-century approach, there's social networking site Facebook. It's easy if you try (and are prepared to stretch the definition of friendship). Share the love. |

40 Buy a piece of university clothing You just can't leave university without a little bit of fleecy cotton comfort to remind you of the good old days. But please, wear it judiciously (see "Buy a suit", No. 29). When you step outside the campus borders it will become deeply unfashionable. Sunday papers and park football only. |

41 Go to the zoo There's bound to be one nearby. You'll develop a new appreciation for animal behaviour in captivity - it's not too much like the working world, honest. |

42 Subscribe to a magazine Or get a daily newspaper delivered. Even though you are up to your eyeballs in assigned reading, try to absorb current affairs as often as possible, especially if it is relevant to your chosen career path. Every employer wants to hire sharp, worldly workers who have a wider sense of the environment in which they work. A subscription to Heat magazine doesn't count, unless you plan to join the paparazzi, of course. |

43 Collect ?0 in loose change Fill a big pot with with the pennies: it may come in useful. As soon as you graduate, student loan payments start eating into your pay cheque, the council chases you for tax and the friendly bank manager who bestowed an interest-free overdraft on you will want their pound of flesh. Wouldn't it be fantastic to hand over ?000 worth of coppers instead? |

44 Take a sandwich year Many students, in engineering or biochemistry, for instance, take a year out halfway to work in industry. You graduate behind most of your friends, but the opportunity to work in your field can be a boon later on: the skills you'll pick up are gold dust for your CV, plus you may impress the employer enough to win a permanent job. Students who take a year out also tend to perform significantly better in their degree exams, says Collier. Even if it doesn't come as a standard part of your course, many departments will support you taking a year out midway - though you'll have to do more legwork to find a position. |

45 Go to a fancy-dress ball Discover new levels of exhibitionism and creativity by making a first-class costume. Bonus points if it involves flashing lights and a car battery. |

46 Brighten up your department Erlenmeyer flasks make for surprisingly attractive vases, and dreary lab benches will often benefit from a tasteful throw. |

48 Find a job The dream scenario is to go straight into a job out of university, and many of the early birds achieve this. Don't panic if you feel left behind, though. Most science graduates find employment pretty quickly: the 2005 unemployment rate six months after graduation was just 6.2 per cent. Few win their dream job at the first try and with over 40 years of working life ahead of you, there's plenty of time to get on a career path that makes you happy. |

49 Give up drinking (twice) Most effectively done with your head actually inside a toilet bowl. Shame on you. |

50 Open your mind Knowing whether you've achieved this depends on your point of view: for some it's about psychedelic substances or "finding yourself", for others it's simply about changing their brand of cereal. So with this in mind, all we'd stress is that you at least open up to the career potential of your degree. Many people come to university so focused on academic study that they fail to see the broad category of jobs that their education prepares them for, says Farrar.
